All Pennsylvanians are proud of the state’s natural resources.  They are scenic, beautiful and have provided drinking water and recreation side-by-side with economic opportunity for generations.   Like coal mining of the early 1900s, natural gas will be a dominant presence in our area for many years to come.  5,000+ drilling permits issued and 2,000+ wells drilled in 3 years.  The natural gas underlying much of Pennsylvania has brought many of the biggest gas companies to our doorstep (Exxon, Chesapeake, Halliburton).  They are making investments in land leases, infrastructure and jobs, because they clearly see the opportunity for huge profits.

Pennsylvania has more than 1 million private water wells.  From our state house to the White House, it is not clear who stands with the average homeowner concerned simply about contamination of their drinking water.   We all hope that the efforts to leverage this new resource are done while ensuring the safety and health of our families. We have witnessed the disastrous impact of gas drilling in Dimock and hear the drumbeat of incidences affecting families and communities across Pennsylvania.

So we must take prudent steps to protect our drinking water and our families.
